Art Sherwood, the Democratic Party’s candidate for State Senate District 45, is, with his candidacy, continuing a lifelong devotion to improving the lives of people.

The 45th District includes the High Country counties of Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell and Watauga.

He is a compassionate servant and effective leader. He is a man of both faith and science. As a university researcher and professor, Art has worked to alleviate the suffering of those impacted by spinal cord injuries or disabilities. Indeed much of his work since earning his doctorate at Duke University has been working with veterans suffering from spinal cord injuries.

Just as Art has worked tirelessly for the vulnerable and injured, he is determined – as your state senator – to help alleviate the suffering inflicted upon our state’s most vulnerable by the Republican Governor Pat McCrory and the GOP-controlled General Assembly. Art will bring a voice of reason to the discourse in an effort to include the real concerns of everyone in the district, regardless of race, religion, economic status, sexual orientation, or national origin, as the Constitution specifies.

Art Sherwood is a compassionate servant. Since college and throughout his career, he has maintained his interest in reaching people through his Christian witness – through actions, not just words. His work with the severely injured has caused him to understand the importance of expanding affordable health care to every person. As a church deacon, he helped focus his congregation on disability and social justice issues

Art Sherwood is an effective leader. He is a leader in his field, serving as the Executive Director of the International Society for Restorative Neurology. He remains on staff at Baylor University. He has worked alongside Nobel laureates. He has served 10 years as a seminary trustee and has provided outstanding leadership in local congregations in Houston, Washington, and Chapel Hill.
