Art Sherwood

Art Sherwood

Art Sherwood has roots that run deep in North Carolina’s Senate district 45, as the Sherwood community of Watauga County was established by his ancestors. His great-grandfather, the Rev. James Justice Lafayette Sherwood, helped establish First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock and served as pastor at First Baptist Church in Boone twice, from 1893-1895 and 1904-1906.

Art and his wife, Gwen, have owned land in the Patterson community of Caldwell County for nearly five decades and settled there permanently when Art retired in 2011.

Like his great-grandfather, Art is a man of active faith. He served two five-year terms as a trustee of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and he has provided leadership in local congregations in Houston, Washington, and Chapel Hill.

Following completion of his doctorate in biomedical engineering from Duke University in 1970, Art devoted his career to helping veterans and others with spinal cord injuries maximize their ability to function independently. He worked for three decades in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, and concluded with a decade in Washington, D.C., where he helped formulate research policies to aid those who have sustained life-altering disabilities.
