Sherwood Calls on Opponent to Repudiate Trump’s Attacks on Fallen Soldier’s Parents

Says too many North Carolinians have died serving the nation to be treated with such disrespect

July 31, 2016

LENOIR, N.C. Art Sherwood, the Democratic candidate for North Carolina State Senate District 45, today called upon his opponent, Deanna Ballard, to repudiate the belittling attacks by GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump against the parents of a soldier Killed in Action in Iraq in 2004.

Sherwood said, “Too many North Carolinians have died serving the nation to be treated with such disrespect. The thousands of veterans living in our district deserve to know if their state senator agrees with Donald Trump, or will repudiate his vicious and bullying attacks upon parents living with the pain of burying their son. Their pain has only been aggravated by Donald Trump, who not only belittled their experience, but questioned their patriotism. It is inconceivable that any person – let alone a candidate for president of the United States – would question the patriotism of parents whose son gave ‘the last full measure of devotion.’

“So, I ask Ms. Ballard to repudiate Donald Trump and his comments. Silence is consent.”

Sherwood pointed out, “As a university researcher and professor, I have worked to alleviate the suffering of those impacted by spinal cord injuries or disabilities. Indeed much of my career has been spent working with veterans suffering from spinal cord injuries. It is shameful that the standard-bearer of the Republican Party obviously has no idea what pain our veterans suffer as a result of answering the call to serve. I agree with Republican Governor John Kasich of Ohio, who tweeted, “There’s only one way to talk about Gold Star parents: with honor and respect.”

Sherwood also criticized Trump’s attack upon the mother of Humayan Khan, the 27-year-old Army captain who died while trying to save his troops from a car bombing. “Trump’s remarks that she was silent because of her Islam faith are nonsense. Why would he attack Ms. Khan? Is he so self-absorbed that he doesn’t understand that a mother’s pain at such a loss just might keep her from speaking?” He continued, “Of course, Captain Khan’s father, Khizr Khan, was quite eloquent. I don’t know if Donald Trump has ever read the Constitution as Mr. Khan asked him, but I do know that Trump has no respect for our active-duty soldiers and veterans. He – nor the Republican Party – represent North Carolina values.”

Senate District 45 includes five counties – Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell and Watauga. Sherwood is a resident of Caldwell County. The General Election will be held on November 8.
