Sherwood Issues Video and Paper Calling for Greater Political Courage

The lack of political courage paralyzes our political process, says candidate in latest paper on Real North Carolina values

November 1, 2016

LENOIR, N.C. – Continuing with his release of videos and position papers on the need to restore real North Carolina values to the North Carolina General Assembly, Art Sherwood, the Democratic candidate for N.C. Senate District 45, today issued a video and paper titled, “Real North Carolina Values: Courage.” The first installments on North Carolina values focused on civility and integrity.

Sherwood shared, “On February 1, 1960 four brave souls took seats at the lunch counter at the F. W. Woolworth department store in downtown Greensboro, N.C. and asked to be served. As we know, they were denied service because they were black. Jim Crow reigned supreme in the South, including in North Carolina. But rather than back down, Ezell A. Blair, Jr. (now Jibreel Khazan), Franklin E. McCain, Joseph A. McNeil, and David L. Richmond came back the next day. More came with them.”

Sherwood observed, “The four men, students at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College, by their courageous actions, set an example that led to hundreds of students joining them. In an instant – before the digital age – similar sit-ins involving thousands of students occurred across the nation. In fact, inspired by the courage of these men, a friend of mine in college joined a sit-in in nearby Winston-Salem.”

Noted Sherwood, “Less than six months later, the lunch counter was desegregated because four brave individuals stood up to injustice. The North Carolina General Assembly needs people who understand the importance – and is willing to accept the cost – of political courage.” He explained, “Courage is simply knowing and doing the right thing – to continue a course of action – regardless of the consequences.”

He continued, “It does not occur in a vacuum. Because we share many backgrounds and faith, we may differ on its basis, but we almost all certainly can agree that we know it when we see it. For me, the moral basis of exercising courage is based on my Christian faith. It is my belief that God honors it. A person of courage is not wishy washy and stands up for what he or she believes. Such a person is not blown this way and that by adverse circumstances. For the call of the Christian, standing against injustices that lead to war, poverty, disease and so many other problems is required. So, then, is courage.”

Sherwood concluded, “Courage – it’s a real North Carolina value. I pledge my best to serve with courage so that, together, we can restore North Carolina to its once great standing as a welcoming and forward-moving state.”

Senate District 45 includes five counties – Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell and Watauga. Sherwood is a resident of Caldwell County. Early voting is underway and runs through Nov. 5. Election Day is Nov. 8.
